Vale Heather Howey
AAPS, SSAPS, SSVAPS, IPS Life Member 1928-2020
It is with much sadness Ivanhoe Photographic Society announces the passing of one of its longest serving members, Heather Howey. Heather passed away peacefully on 5th March 2020 at the Benetas Broughton Hall Aged Care Home in Camberwell after a brief illness. Up until her last weeks, Heather had lived independently in Ivanhoe, a short distance from IPS’ meeting venue.
Heather was much loved by all members, diligently taking her 2nd row seat at every meeting after her small serve of fish and chips beforehand at the Old England, accompanied by Sara and Rod Knight. Heather was always pleasant and congenial and had a deep passion for photography. Heather attended most social functions and always enjoyed the IPS Easter weekends away. Up until her passing, fellow IPS Life Member, Rob Burkitt, would regularly have coffee with Heather at Warringal, helping her read the IPS News Brief due to her failing eyesight.
Heather joined IPS in 1970, having previously been a member for 11 years at the Camberwell Camera Club and Werribee Camera Club. Heather was a keen slide worker and, later, audio visual maker prior to the digital age. She took on the job as secretary of IPS in 1971, and worked with seven Presidents during her 22 years in office, retiring from her position in 1993. Together, with her husband Ian, Heather opened their home for progressive dinners and committee meetings. She was a VAPS delegate for several years, convenor of the judging panel for IPS, and was on the committee for VAPSCON 1995. Heather was honoured with her IPS Life Membership in 1976. She also spent 2 years researching and writing the first 25 years of history for APS, which was published in 1980. This time consuming work earned her the service award , SSAPS. She was awarded her SSVAPS a few years later. Heather was awarded a Jagajaga Community Australia Day award in 2002 for her extensive contributions to the community with her photography. In 2007, IPS created a new annual trophy for the Folio Demonstrating Versatility competition, to continue on from the Kodak Plaques and named this trophy in honour of Heather. We were all very pleased to award Heather her 60-year membership badge at the IPS 2019 End of Year Presentation night, which Heather enjoyed very much.
RIP Heather, from all your friends at IPS
